Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Since her father's death the family, it was managed by her mother, grandmother, and godparents. When she was a young girl, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional disorder. Ford began to become attracted to acting in her teenaged years, she joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of weeks, she realized this school wasn't for her. Ford then applied to be a student at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993. However, she already had her TV debut in the 1992 episode Surgical Spirit. She adopted the name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in TV programs such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning in the Nineties. She also worked regularly at the theater, ultimately joining the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. However, Tate quickly began gaining notice for her stand-up comedy and added stand-up comedy to her repertoire in 1996.
